The Ark
The Ark

Ilvy Njiokiktjien (1984)

This is my personal Flood. As a photographer I always record other people's pain. Now that I suffer so much pain myself, I felt I could not ignore it. In September my mother died. It happened so fast that it overwhelmed me, my two sisters and my brother as a huge wave. We have now entered a new stage in our lives, a life without her. I grew up in a houseboat, 'the Ark'. This is home, but with my mother no longer there, 'home' has gained a new meaning.

Most people fill their life mainly with work. We do not have much time for others, hardly any real contact. The day after the cremation I answered 320 e-mails. You cannot take a break from life. Work continues, everything continues.
